Dear Ottumwa Schools Families,
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Kenlie Burns, age 11, who passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025. Kenlie was a hospital homebound student of ours and had been enrolled at Pickwick Early Childhood Center, James Elementary School, and Liberty Intermediate School. She was part of our district community from her earliest school years, and her strength, resilience, and spirit touched many.
For the past seven years, our district has had the privilege of serving Kenlie through a homebound model of instruction. Kenlie has been an important member of the Bulldog Family since beginning at Pickwick at age three. She was a proud student at James Elementary from kindergarten through fifth grade and transitioned to Liberty Intermediate this year.
Though she was not always in the general classroom or a traditional school setting, it was always our goal to provide Kenlie with high-quality instruction and a genuine sense of belonging. Whenever possible, she joined the James community—through occasional visits to her peers or through virtual opportunities that allowed her to learn and engage just like the rest of her classmates.
"Kenlie was an absolute joy to work with. She loved many things, especially elephants and giraffes." said Megan VerSteegh, a teacher who worked closely with Kenlie. "She was one of the most resilient individuals we have ever had the honor of knowing and teaching—a fierce fighter with just the right amount of sass and a smile that could melt anyone’s heart." Kenlie has left a lasting impression on every staff member fortunate enough to work with her.
Though words feel inadequate, we want to express our deepest sympathy to Kenlie’s family as we share in their grief and offer our support. Superintendent McGrory stated, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this difficult time.”
As we navigate this loss, the Ottumwa Community School District has organized support services for both students and staff. Our priority is to ensure that everyone affected has access to the resources they need to cope and heal.
On behalf of the Ottumwa Community School District and our entire school community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Kenlie’s family, friends, teachers, and all who had the privilege to know her. May we hold fast to our compassionate spirit and care for one another in the days ahead.
With sympathy and support,
Michael McGrory, Superintendent
Megan VerSteegh, Ottumwa Schools Teacher
